Jack Halpern

JACK HALPERN is the CEO of The CJK Dictionary Institute (CJK) in Japan. The institute is one of the world’s prime sources for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) dictionaries, and specializes in compiling comprehensive CJK and Arabic lexical databases. A lexicographer by profession, Halpern spent sixteen years compiling the New Japanese-English Character Dictionary, soon to be reissued in an expanded form as The Kodansha Kanji Dictionary. The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary, a work which set the standard in the field, has just been published in a revised and expanded edition. Halpern has given over 600 public lectures on Japanese language and culture, and presented several dozen papers at international conferences. Jack Halpern has lived in Japan for over thirty years. He was born in Germany, and has made his home in six countries including France, Brazil, and the U.S. An avid polyglot, he has studied fifteen languages (fluent in ten).
